Kenya is a coin.
Do you have any idea how much the Kenyan economy has turned around in the past 12 or so months? here's a sample
1. the stock market is trading at an all time high with expectations of rising even higher. Some co.s havemade profits for the 1st time ever e.g National Bank, Unga,
2. Hotels at the have an all time high in booking having an average capacity of 75%
3. There were advertisement for jobs in the paper last week like 3 pages(when's the last time we saw that)
4. about 480000 new jobs were created last year. the beauty of this is that most of them (like 90%) were "jua kali" enterpreneurs. this could be implied to be that they are gonna employ people in the future.
this coin has two sides
Many many people are dying in the north and eastern parts of this country. news just got to us recently about their plight because we're simply too preoccupied with ourselves and meaningless things that add no ugali to peoples plates. I saw someone on the TV recently who had jus watched a camel that had given her milk for the last 10 yrs die of thirst. the people are so desperate they've given up all hope for their animals all they are crying out for is help for them & their kids
What side are you gonna look at?

The gap between the two sides of the coin gets wider, much wider something has got to give.
tomas do I have to take sides?
It is great news to see improvement in our economy due to stringent fiscal and monetary policies adopted by the new government which have increased investors and consumers confidence. The creation of jobs is welcome news to many. This trickle down effect of the policies I mentioned was what Kibaki cautioned Wananchi to be patient about 3 years ago when everyone expected change to occur overnight after elections( I hope Kenyans have learnt something about process of change)
2. The other issue of our Arid and Semi arid areas in NorthEastern Kenya is of concern too. Personally, I have to blame the previous Govt and elected officials for ignoring this region for over a decade. It is kind of hard to undo 20+ years of neglect. I also believe the government cannot go at it alone that is why such areas need a thorough study of the sustainable devt projects which are compatible to the culture, geographical/climatic conditions of NorthEastern Kenya. For instance, our universities' professors /research fellows would come up with well written proposals with special emphasis on transparency ( we all know we are corrupt:-) and I think many NGOs who would fund such projects. Serioulsy I think the government with its current budget cannot afford much for such areas for the longer term. Also the MPs of those areas should be spending time in parliament fighting for these causes instead of involving themselves in dangerous talk and creating tribal factions.
Tomas Pole sana for writing a term paper on your blog.
@prousette: short & to the point
@irena: Deep!!thanx I could use such material for my exam
i think if you remove government expenditure from the picture, hotels, car dealers, banks will not be doing as well.
@bankelele.. true about the gvt.because of our underdeveloped economy, it still remains the primary client for institutions selling otherwise luxury goods.
Speechless I). No siding but here I see we got good and bad news.
If I was to take sides then I'd talk for the dying folks in eastern. For those negelected ones; those that everyone seems to have forgotten. Coz I feel death is really wrong esp when a country can do something but ignorantly kicks back and watches such happen; its just too sad.
On the other hand they've kept one side of their promise then coz didnt they give their word that they'd provide 500,000 jobs? and 480,000 my guy you gotta agree is beating too close to home right? Economy has improved props to all of them.
But they also cant kick back now coz all's not well, not just yet yet. They need up and get something happening in Eastern to save the mwananchi.
Lovely post Tomas, great piece.
Loving the way your posts are short and hit all the way home :)
It is usually the same all over the world. Remember how Katrina exposed the USA? All that abject poverty in such a powerful and rich country. Si we pray that as confidence and wealth grows in the country, the poor and starving will not be forgotten.
Nice post
